Final word
Final wordZuma and the turncoats

When the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) recently heaped glowing congratulations and adulation on the head of ex-president Thabo Mbeki on the occasion of his 70th birthday, president Jacob Zuma could be forgiven if the term “turncoats” came to his mind. Five years ago, the ANCYL helped Zuma to oust Mbeki as leader. Now it is Zuma's birthday that’s been forgotten.

SA SceneANC policy conference

On both the fronts of important policy matters and who will lead the African National Congress (ANC), the party’s all-important policy conference ended this past weekend on a distinctly inconclusive note. The deciding factors lie with branches of the ANC in the run up to the elective congress in December in Mangaung where policy documents will also be finalised.

Olympic watchBlade runner might still go to 2012 games

Oscar Pistorius' four-year quest to run in the 400 metres at the London Olympics ended in heartbreak. He missed out on qualifying by an agonising 0.22 seconds, winning silver in the final at the African championship at 45.52 seconds. Having run the fastest time in the individual 400 metres event this year, he could be named in the 4x100 metre relay event at the announcement of the final South African Olympic team.

Rugby watchSuper 15 home stretch

After the weekend, most people would talk about the sensational Bulls in Pretoria and the scrappy Stormers at Newlands but the Cape Town-based team has just about secured the top position at the South African conference in the home stretch of the Vodacom Super Rugby competition despite the absence of many of the team's top stars.
