Monetary policyDemand-side pressure on inflation increases

Inflation pressures in South Africa are expected to become more generalised, reflecting demand-side pressure rather than only external factors, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) warned. This seems to signal an eventual monetary tightening. "In general, monetary policy can do little to combat the impact or first-round effects of inflation that is driven by exogenous shocks," SARB governor Gill Marcus said.

Probably the last economic card available to  the West to play against Iran in the ongoing battle over that country’s nuclear programme has been used. Its banking system was cut off from the global financial network on 17 March. It is unlikely to persuade Iran to change course as the stakes are mounting in a geopolitical standoff in the Middle East. One mistake by anyone of the parties (The United States, Israel, Iran, Britain,  Russia – to name but a few) can set off an immensely destructive international armed conflict.
